A.P.C. 1987–2003 Commemorative Notebook
A.P.C. began in Paris in 1987, founded by Jean Touitou.
True to its name, "Atelier de Production et de Création," it was never a brand that led with big logos or flashy imagery from the start.
Rather, it was a brand that quietly built up the culture existing between the clothes themselves and the people, music, photography, art, and the atmosphere of the city that surrounded them.
This book, "Carnet Commemoratif," was produced in 2003 to commemorate A.P.C.'s 15th anniversary.
Instead of explaining A.P.C.’s activities from 1987 to 2003 through text like a typical brand history, it documents them primarily through visuals such as posters, direct mail, photographs, and graphics.
The list of contributors is also fascinating.
It includes Sofia Coppola, Roman Coppola, Takashi Homma, Hiroshi Fujiwara, Ellen von Unwerth, Zoë Cassavetes, Charles Anastase, and others.
In particular, the inclusion of Hiroshi Fujiwara and Takashi Homma is symbolic when considering the distance between A.P.C. and Japanese culture.
At the time, A.P.C. was an entity that couldn't be described simply by the term "French Basic" as it is today.
Paris and Tokyo.
Fashion and photography.
Independent music and art.
People from different scenes were connected through the small common denominator that was A.P.C.
And what is interesting is that this book does not overly explain these things.
With the exception of the introduction, it is composed almost entirely of visuals, designed in a way where you "pick up" the atmosphere of the time yourself rather than "reading" it.
Limited to 300 copies in Japan, this is a precious archive for understanding A.P.C. in the early 2000s.
While it is a brand book, it is simultaneously a volume that traverses the fashion, photography, graphics, and street culture of Tokyo from that era.
