Ray Parker Jr. & Raydio – A Woman Needs Love

The fourth album by Ray Parker Jr. & Raydio, released by Arista Records in 1981.

The title track, “A Woman Needs Love (Just Like You Do),” is a masterpiece of Black Contemporary/Urban Soul, characterized by its sweet, mellow melody and sophisticated, urban bassline.

According to Ray Parker Jr. himself, the song was created as a reimagining of the early Raydio hit “Jack and Jill” from a woman's perspective. He has noted that the two songs share similar musical ideas and that he even performed them as a medley during his live shows.

Upon its release, the album reached number one on the US R&B charts, while the title track peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100.

This sweet, mellow groove has lived on through the sampling culture of later Hip-Hop and G-Rap. In the world of Japanese Hip-Hop, this record is well known as the source material for DS455’s “Ride Wit Tha D.S.C. ~Just Like Me~.”

This 1981 US pressing allows listeners to enjoy both Ray Parker Jr.’s innate sense of funk as a guitarist and his sophisticated soul production.
