Various Artists - Countryman Original Soundtrack

The original soundtrack to the 1982 Jamaican film "Countryman."

A double album featuring legendary Jamaican artists, led by Bob Marley & The Wailers, along with Lee "Scratch" Perry, Toots & The Maytals, Steel Pulse, Aswad, Dennis Brown, Rico, and others.

Island Records founder Chris Blackwell, who produced the film, remixed existing tracks for the movie and incorporated synth themes by Wally Badarou alongside dub-influenced sounds.

In addition to Bob Marley tracks like "Natural Mystic," "Rat Race," "Small Axe," and "Jah Live," the collection includes Lee Perry's "Dreadlocks In Moonlight" and Toots & The Maytals' "Bam Bam."

"Dreadlocks In Moonlight" is particularly notable as a track produced by Lee Perry at his Black Ark Studio. Rather than a simple compilation for the film, this record captures the atmosphere of 1982 Jamaican music, blending roots reggae, dub, and cinematic score.

Beyond serving as a direct source for Hip-Hop sampling, the appeal lies in hearing artists ranging from Bob Marley to Lee Perry and Wally Badarou on a single project. The concept of reediting existing recordings to present them within a new cinematic context is fascinating, especially when tracing the evolution of sampling and remix culture.
