Joyce – Modern Gafieira
Released in 2001, Gafieira Moderna is an album by one of Brazil’s most iconic singer/songwriters, Joyce.
The title, “Gafieira,” refers to music born from Brazil's dance hall and ballroom dance culture.
Based on a traditional style centered on samba, jazz, and horn sections, Joyce infuses her own vocals, guitar, and a modern sensibility into the mix.
This album captures the various elements of Brazilian music in a single record, including “Samba Da Silvia,” which features guest artist Elza Soares; “Azul Bahia,” which evokes the atmosphere of Bahia; and the Afro-samba track “Forças D’Alma.”
In the 90s, Joyce was deeply involved in the movement where Brazilian music from the 60s and 70s was rediscovered on dance floors by young DJs and club music listeners, particularly in London.
Gafieira Moderna is a work born in that era where the traditions of Brazilian music intersected with the European club culture of the time.
This is a record to enjoy for the richness of the music itself, where Samba, Bossa Nova, Jazz, and MPB connect naturally, rather than viewing it merely as a source for flashy samples.
