Jurassic 5 - Quality Control

Quality Control is the 1st album from Jurassic 5, released in 2000.

Jurassic 5 is a six-member group that emerged from the L.A. underground hip-hop scene.

Featuring sample-based production by DJ Nu-Mark and Cut Chemist, along with four MCs—Chali 2na, Zaakir, Akil, and Marc 7—this work carries on the legacy of 90s hip-hop while bridging into the 2000s.

The background of the album's production is also quite interesting.

Tracks like "Quality Control," "Concrete Schoolyard," and "Jayou" were shaped based on beats and sample tapes that Cut Chemist had created in the mid-90s.

Digging through old records to find a split-second of sound, then cutting and layering it.

That very essence of DJ and sampling culture remains deeply ingrained in Jurassic 5’s music.

“Swing Set” features samples from Bill Deal & The Rhondels, Rusty Bryant, Sandy Nelson, and more.

The sound that traverses jazz, soul, funk, and breakbeats in tracks like "Jayou" and "Concrete Schoolyard" is also emblematic of L.A. hip-hop from this era.

Rather than flashiness, it’s about digging through records, combining sounds, and four MCs passing the mic.

It is an album that lets you fully enjoy the classic charm inherent in hip-hop.
