The Upsetters – The Upsetter Collection
A 1981 UK compilation from Trojan Records, collecting recordings by Lee “Scratch” Perry and The Upsetters from 1969 to 1973.
Features tracks such as “Return Of Django,” “Bucky Skank,” “Cow Thief Skank,” and “Freak Out Skank.”
During this period, Perry began shaping a new form of reggae, incorporating elements of Ska, Rocksteady, Funk, and Soul while restructuring sound around the drums and bass, utilizing echoes, sound effects, and unique mixing techniques.
Although these recordings predate his Black Ark Studio era, this record already reveals the “sound processing” sensibilities that would later define Lee Perry’s work.
Rather than being a direct source for Hip-Hop sampling, this is an interesting record for tracing a production philosophy that treats samples as raw material to transform existing music into something new.
You can also enjoy the intersection of Soul/Funk and Jamaican music, such as on “Freak Out Skank,” which quotes Al Green’s “Love And Happiness.”
